Let's face it. The only people picking up a cricket game are the hardcore cricket fans. It's easily the hardest game to pull off for the PC or the console. There are just too many individual styles to model if you have to impress the hardcore fan. And when you see Glenn Mcgrath and Mashrafe Mortaza ("Who" you ask? C'mon guys, the Bangladesh opening bowler) bowling with the same action and speed, it kinda puts you off. Thus goes the story of EA Sports' Cricket series. I've played the 97, 2000, 2002 and the 2004 versions of this game. The game engine and the graphics have improved considerably over time. Unfortunately the gameplay hasn't. Especially when it comes to bowling. And this is the only time that Richie Benaud will really grate your nerves. I haven't played Brian Lara cricket, and that's generally been a better rated game.
And now Cricket 2005 is out and the consensus ain't that good. Check out the reviews here. Going by looks, this doesn't look all that different from 2004. Check out the screenshot above of 2004 and the one on the left of 2005. Anybody try this game? I have played only the PC versions. Is it a little better on PS2/XBox?If you are interested in the game you can get it here. I wonder why they put Daniel Vettori on the cover.

have never seen a cricket game that does not lose it charm within a few days. You crack the gameplay pretty easily, and you're right the bowling always sucks....

I haven't played any of the games. But the screenshots look awesome. But I can imagine it must be hard to link up gameplay with the subtleties of the game. Baseball and Football were a load of crap before they were fine tuned to the games they are today. 2007 and future versions could definitely be better.
I kinda liked 97 'coz it was the first of its kind so much fun smashing everybody around. Then 2000 was a horror and 2002 again was fun with the batting. One of the main problems with 2004, too many AI quirks. The fielders sometimes are positive dumbasses. And hit a few boundaries off the best bowlers, the wicketkeeper lets boundary byes every over.
If EA Sports cleans up the AI a little bit and captures some of the individual personalities of the players like they've done in NBA, this would be a killer game to have.
Brain Lara was very good. Esp the 2002 version. However I must say that I only used to bat...
The bowling was a lot easier to control though that the EA Sports versions.
Well I'm as crazy as you. Bought all of the games and played each of them for hours. The PC versions are much much better than the console ones. An analog stick is a real dog when it comes to bowling. I know the reviews such for 2005, but I'd really be interested in giving it a test drive. I really didn't like the confidence meters in 2004. I hope they've done away with that.
